It is with great pride and excitement that the Rome Sports Hall of Fame and Museum opens its doors to a NASCAR Super Star. On July 25, 2009 at 3pm, The Rome Sports Hall of Fame and Museum will host a reception in honor of NASCAR Modified Racing Great, Jerry Cook.

Jerry, a 1991 inductee of the Rome Sports Hall of Fame, was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, Alabama on April 23, 2009. A native of Lockport, NY and a long time resident of Rome, NY, Jerry exploded onto the NASCAR Modified scene in the early 1970s, winning the NASCAR Modified Championship in 1971, 72, 74, 75, 76, & 77.

The lone second place finish in that run was to another Roman NASCAR legend (and Rome Sports Hall of Fame member), Richie Evans. Between the two drivers, the NASCAR Modified Champion resided in Rome, New York for 15 straight years. Jerry retired from driving in 1982 and was immediately hired by NASCAR, becoming the organization's full-time director of the modifieds...the sanctioning body's oldest circuit.

The Rome Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring and preserving the great sports achievements of athletes of Rome, New York. It has over 50 exhibits that capture the thrill and the achievements of Rome's gifted athletes with pictures, trophies, uniforms and equipment depicting their days of glory.

July 26 – Annual Induction

The Rome Sports Hall of Fame and Museum Inductees and Special Recognition Awards Reception at the Rome Sports Hall of Fame and Museum at 3 pm; formal induction dinner to follow at the Beeches. Info 337-5764.


August 1 – Golf Tournament

The Rome Sports Hall of Fame and Museum Golf Tournament will have a 1pm Shotgun Start at Rome Country Club. $65pp, 4 person Scramble, 18 holes. Proceeds will support sports clinics and recognition ceremonies for Rome youth as well as museum upkeep. Info 339-7656.
